Types of user research

User research explains why people behave as they do. Competitor analysis showed what exists; research shows what people need, feel, and struggle with.

Use more than one method

Each method fits a different audience size. Mixing them gives you both emotion and numbers.

  • Interviews — small audience. Talk one-to-one (video call is fine).
  • Field studies — medium audience. Watch people where they will use the app.
  • Surveys — large audience. Collect quantitative answers at scale.

Interviews

Interviews help you understand emotions you will later use on an empathy map. Observe the person as they talk, and ask follow-up questions when something feels unfinished.

A video call works when you cannot meet in person. Keep the tone open — you are learning, not selling the app.

Field studies

Run field sessions in a place where people would actually use your app — home, commute, shop floor, or office. Context changes what “easy” means.

Surveys

Use a form tool (Google Forms or similar) for quantitative data. Balance open-ended and closed questions. Responses land in a spreadsheet and charts that help you see patterns fast.
